Pool Seal™ vs Poly-Sulfide


What is Pool Mastic ?

The material that is put between a swimming pools coping stone and the pool deck to keep the intrusion of water between the deck and pool. The dangers of this seal NOT being maintain will lead to problems with the structure of your pool. Common problems for examples; the cracking of your pool deck with water able to get below your deck the drastic temperatures changes in Texas make this a serious problem, also water can soak into the thin set of the coping and with freezing temperature the expansion of water will displace the coping, these are just a few problems that will happen over time if this product is not maintained.

What are the choices you have to repair this problem and how do they work?
Poly-Sulfide -is a two part, polysulfide-based joint sealant that is resistant to today's common pool chemicals used in a normal way. Poly-Sulfide is designed to be used inside of aircraft fuel cells and is also sold to the swimming pool supply industry to be installed around swimming pools.

Pool Seal™- is a sand base joint filler with water activated polymers and hardeners that binds the filler material together. PoolSeal™ is used to fill joints subject to concrete movement to provide a firm, compressionable, weather-resistant protection to water intrusion. and weed growth It is specially designed to be used around swimming pools after they have settled atleast 3-5 year old pools.


How many different sizes are available?

Poly-Sulfide – for self-leveling sealant packaged in 96 oz & 24 oz

Pool Seal™ – Comes in 3 different quantities 2 bags, 4 bags, 6 bags, 8 bags as per this website if you need Contractor sizes please contact manufacture

How much does mastic cost?
Poly-Sulfide – The 96oz kit cost the consumer about $85.00 a kit retail

Pool Seal™ – 4 bags cost $89.99

How many feet will that cover?
That is all based on the width of you gap between your deck and coping stone. The avg width is ½ inch and the depth is determined by the recommendation of the manufacture of the product. Poly-Sulfide ; is a 2:1 ratio Pool Seal ™ recommends 1:1 ratio allowing for more product in the joint.

Poly-Sulfide – The 96oz kit will go 56 linear ft based on 1/2 inch deep and 1/2 inch wide gap

Pool Seal™ – will go 20-25 ft for every bag based on ½ inch wide and ½ inch deep gap. The 4- bag box will go approximately 80-100 ft enough cover most standard pool radius.

What colors are available?

Poly-Sulfide - Stone Gray, and Desert Tan are the standard colors. Black and Redwood are available by special order.

Pool Seal™- Tan, Oklahoma, Gray, are the standard colors.

What is the recommended depth you should install each product based on joint size?

Poly-Sulfide - A 2:1 width-to-depth ratio is recommended.

Pool Seal™ - A 1:1 width-to-depth ratio is recommended for joints ½”x½” or less, 2:1 for joints greater than ½”x½”. PoolSeal™ should not be used in joints less than 1/8" wide or over 2".

What is the shelf life each?
Poly-Sulfide -The shelf life from date of manufacture for Poly-Sulfide Two Part is minimum one year when stored in unopened containers under 80ºF.
Pool Seal™- has no shelf life it is a dry base compound


Can either be sealed with an acrylic Sealer?
Poly-sulfide- cannot be sealed with solvent based sealers it breaks down the poly-sulfide and will stain from dirt after the solvent breaks it down.

Pool Seal™- It is all right to seal Pool Seal™ with an acrylic sealer it will increase the resistance to water, and maintain a clean seal.


How long do I have to work with them?

Poly Sulfide- Two Part has a work life of approximately one hour at 77ºF. The higher the temperature the shorter the work life

Pool Seal™- Since there is no mixing , you are not held to a time line you have all the time you need to install Pool Seal™ year round.

How long does it take for the them to cure?

Poly-Sulfide -Two Part, the material is tack free in four hours and cures in 24 hours at 77ºF.

Pool Seal™- the material is tack free in 15 min's the top-layer skins in 30 min's and cures in 24 hours at 80ºF

The product didn't set - it's still sticky. What happened?

Poly- Sulfide- Did you follow the mixing instructions on the container or listed on the product data sheet? Is the product still in date? See the above information concerning shelf life.

Pool Seal™- that’s not possible

Some of the Poly-Sulfide from the same kit set up and some didn't. What happened?

Poly-Sulfide- from the same kit sets up intermittently or randomly in the joint, there is a problem in the mixing operation. The two components were not thoroughly blended together for the required amount of time. The material will have to be removed from the joint.
Pool Seal™- that’s not possible.


How do I clean Poly-Sulfide if I spill it on my deck?

Poly-Sulfide;- Immediately remove "wet" poly-sulfide using Toluene or Xylene and a clean cloth with a dabbing motion. Circular motion will spread the product. If thepoly-Sulfide has dried, try using fine sandpaper and lightly buff the area. If you have a coating system or a painted deck, check with the manufacturer of the system or the paint to see if there is a compatibility problem with using Toluene or Xylene. If there is a problem, ask for their recommendation.
